Why does Elliot look dishevelled?
This is an interesting question, and it's one that threw me off a little when my grandson asked. I never anticipated anyone would ever ask this.
I know what I was thinking at the time, but I never thought I would have to ever explain it.
The simple answer is,
Because he’s Elliot Raine, not a generic “LinkedIn City Slicker in a three‑piece.” His brand is polished thinking and outcomes, not polished tailoring.
Substance over suit
When we were thinking about +ER and its alter ego Elliot Raine, it was clear what we wanted to show, we wanted to show a focus that Elliot was “ the QS / commercial and Contract guy who actually solves problems,” not “I’m a city slicker focusing on appearance not the results.”
If we suddenly rebranded into a hyper-dapper, flash-suit persona, there’s a real risk it would detract from our core competence and our culture. It would feel inauthentic to the people who engage with us – construction directors, owners, and QSs who live in hi-vis and boardrooms, not GQ photoshoots.
The visual brand we are actually building
Right now, we are letting our brand talk for us and our “ultra polished” work shows in:
- Our clear, no‑nonsense posts explaining messy contract issues in plain English.
- Our calm, measured tone when we focus on talk about claims and disputes, which builds trust more than a sharp lapel ever will.
In that context, a “flash suit” is actually off‑brand: it suggests performance and theatre, while we want to focus on outcome certainty, competence, and calm handling of risk.
The lesson is simple but powerful:
- Don’t just look organised—be organised.
- Don’t just talk about helping—actually help.
- Don’t just start things—finish them well.
Anyone watching Elliot shouldn't just see a character in a suit; they should see someone who is results focused and not just focused on box ticking.
Reliability as a superpower
Most alter ego's are driven by big emotions or wild adventures. Elliot’s superpower is reliability.
- He turns up prepared.
- He keeps his notes in order.
- He finishes the boring bits that others avoid.
That might sound small, but to a business under pressure, in its hour of need, it’s huge. Elliot demonstrates that being dependable is heroic. When something goes wrong, everyone knows: “Elliot will sort it.” Not because he’s the loudest or flashiest, but because he delivers—every time.
Where clothes do matter
That doesn’t mean “clothes don’t matter”; it means the bar is different on different days, the dress needs to match the day.
Elliot’s real magic is that he cares more about polished deliverables than polished appearances. He’s the character who double‑checks the plan, quietly fixes the small mistakes, and finishes the boring bits properly so everything actually works. While others focus on looking important, Elliot shows children that effort, reliability, and well-finished work are what really matter. In his world, the neat suit is just costume—the true professionalism is in the promises he keeps and the quality of what he delivers.
But don't be forgiven.... when it becomes a necessity, Elliot is the most dapper gent of them all!
If you had to choose, would you rather your on‑camera look leans slightly more towards “site‑friendly practical” or more “boardroom‑leaning formal”?
